Planning and Design

At the Craftsman Gardener, we believe that good garden design is the product of a thorough understanding of how gardens work.  That’s why we see ourselves as gardeners first and designers second.  Too much froth surrounds the subject of garden design these days.  Although we are fully trained in the principles of design, experience has taught us that most good design comes down to common sense and a flare for judging what will look good in any given situation.  As gardeners, however, we must emphasise that we are firmly committed to the idea that it’s plants that make a garden look good - so if concrete, steel and glass are more your thing, we suggest you contact your local builder!

Although we are able to offer a full design service to those that need it, we have found that many of our clients are not looking to remodel their gardens from scratch.  Often these clients want to retain that established look, while simply adjusting things to suit their current needs.  At the Craftsman Gardener, we specialize in making the most of your existing garden, and know best how to incorporate any new features into the existing scheme. We find that expensive drawings detailing the precise position of every paving slab and plant suggestion are rarely necessary: a basic plan or sketch together with common sense and on-site presence is often all that is required.

There are of course occasions when something more is needed.  Newly built houses, for example, often have no garden to speak of at all.  And in these instances, we relish the idea of working with our clients to create something out of nothing!
